Scrutina

Terms of use

Last updated: 15 October 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and HM Verge Consulting, Manitoba, Canada, which makes Scrutina. By using the app or this website you accept them. If you don’t, please don’t use Scrutina.

What Scrutina is

Scrutina helps you read food and cosmetic labels, keep a food diary and cook at home. It is free and has no ads. We may add, change or remove features, and we try to tell you in the app when a change is significant.

Not medical advice

Scores, targets, alerts and explanations are general information to help you choose. They are not medical, nutritional or dermatological advice and do not replace a clinician or dietitian. If you have an allergy, a condition, take medication or follow a clinical diet, ask a professional, and always read the package itself.

Product information can be wrong

Product data comes mostly from Open Food Facts and Open Beauty Facts, open databases written by volunteers and manufacturers, and from what you photograph. Recipes, ingredients and labels change, and entries can be incomplete or out of date. Scrutina says when it lacks data, but we cannot promise that any product information, score or allergen alert is complete or correct. The label on the product you hold is what counts.

Your account

An account is optional. If you create one, keep access to your email secure and tell us if you think someone else has used your account. You need to be 13 or older to create an account. You can delete it at any time from the app.

Reviews and what you share

If you write a review or choose a display name, you keep ownership of it, and you allow us to show it in Scrutina and to store, copy and moderate it for that purpose. Reviews must be honest and about the product. Do not post anything that is abusive, hateful, sexual, misleading, spam, someone else’s personal information, links or advertising. We filter reviews automatically and may hold, edit out personal details, or remove any review, and suspend accounts that break these rules. You can report a review, or block its author so you no longer see their reviews, from the flag on the review. Blocked people are listed in Settings, where you can unblock them.

Using Scrutina fairly

  • Don’t try to break, overload or get around the app’s security, or access other people’s data.
  • Don’t scrape or resell Scrutina’s scores or content.
  • Don’t use Scrutina to harm other people, including through the household and friends features.

Tips

Tips are optional one-off payments through the App Store or Google Play. They unlock nothing and do not create any obligation for us to provide a feature or service. Refunds follow Apple’s or Google’s policies.

Other services

Scrutina works with services run by others, including Apple, Google, Open Food Facts, Supabase and Resend. Their own terms apply to them. If you downloaded Scrutina from the App Store, Apple’s Licensed Application End User Licence Agreement also applies; Apple is not responsible for the app or its support.

Open data and licences

Product data from Open Food Facts and Open Beauty Facts is available under the Open Database Licence. The Canadian Nutrient File is used under the Open Government Licence – Canada. The Scrutina name, icon and design remain ours.

No warranty and limits on liability

Scrutina is provided as it is and as available. To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for decisions made using information in the app. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have as a consumer that cannot be limited by law.

Ending use

You can stop using Scrutina and delete your account at any time. We may suspend access for someone who seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms.

Changes

We may update these terms. We will post the new version here with a new date, and tell you in the app when a change matters. Continuing to use Scrutina after that means you accept the change.

Law

These terms are governed by the laws of Manitoba and of Canada that apply there. If you are a consumer living elsewhere, you keep the protections of your local law.
